History as Written by the Winners, or the United States as a Liberal Republic

I remember reading something once along the lines of “the past is history; the present is politics; and future politics will dictate the telling of the history of the present.” There is no such thing as a-political politics; and for the same reason there is no such thing as an a-political historiography either. At its foundation, history is a chronicle of the struggle over power. As future history the present moment, like all those moments preceding it, is likewise a struggle over power—particularly that most important of legitimating sources of power: narrative.
